Having completed my degree in Ceramic Design in Crawford College in June 2000 I went in search of a place where I could pursue my interest in jewellery and metalwork as this was not available in art college. In July I began an apprenticeship at Sean Carroll & Sons Cork. This company are silversmiths and jewellers so I had the opportunity to work on small items of jewellery and also much large silver commissions. The work ranged from designing and making engagement rings to repairing and restoring large ecclesiastical pieces, allowing me to develop a broad range of skills.
In September 2001 I was awarded a scholarship to study a Masters of Arts in Ceramics in University of Wales Institute Cardiff. I used this opportunity to combine my detailed work in jewellery with my previous work in ceramic sculpture. Having received my Masters in 2002 I returned to Ireland where I was fortunate to resume my job with Sean Carroll & Sons. Over the next seven years I designed and made wedding jewellery and large silver commissions. In October 2010 I began my own business designing and making silver gents jewellery. Having also trained as a silversmith my current work combines the techniques I have learnt over the years in Carrolls with my sculptural background.
My work deals with the concepts of balance and fluidity in both sculpture and everyday usable items. It is important to me that the techniques used are all done by hand. These techniques have remained unchanged since early silversmithing. My work marries these techniques with contemporary forms to give the work a craft base to these design led forms.
